This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

I can remember sitting around the iseng glass pot belly stove on weekends with Lloyd Hake (he is 92 now) and Leon Heth (he passed on so young at 53) some 85 years ago, listening to my grandfather read these great tails of the friends of Mother West Wind, while the North Winds blew around our house in Wisconsin at 30 below zero. Tony and Ozzie would trudge down to our farm through snow up to their crotch just to watch 'the old man' lick his thumb, dig into this and other Burgees books, and say vell, las mer gook wass ik habben herin, yets? And when he found where he had left off we all took imaginary wings into the land of winds and animals that spoke with one another, and animals that all got along with one another. Mother West Wind'S Animal Friends Thornton Waldo Burgess Books Reviews
My 12 year old boy enjoys these stories. They bring anmals to life. They are about 3rd to 4th grade reading level in my estimate. He is on about an 8th grade level, but likes to read these for relaxing.
I grew up with these stories. So glad I could find a copy for my grandchildren.
My children loved this book years ago. I enjoyed reading it again and wondered if children today would still enjoy it. A wonderful book for all ages.
This is first book of series and title of the series. All are great Little Joe Otter REDDY Fox. There was a rabbit, a dog Fox otter owl, crow. All lived together in the woods with their families. Give a brake over 60 years since I read these books.I would recommend them to any child who loves animals.
Great five minute stories that I remember reading as a kid and now I can start reading them to my daughter. Simple and easy to understand, many of the stories teach lessons about morals, instead of mindless blather. I am enjoying reading through the series again.
This is an excellent children's book for ages 2-6. It was written about a hundred years ago but is still excellent. Some years ago I recorded some of the stories and sent them to a friend's children. It was immediately their favorite. It was also a favorite of mine. I would recommend it to everyone.
Thorton Burgess wrote an entire series of Mother West Wind stories close to a hundred years ago. All are about animals and their adventures in Green Forest----Prickly Porky the Porcupine joins a number of others from previous books like Reddy Fox, Peter Rabbit, and Happy Jack Squirrel. Even though this is a continuation of other books, the stories can stand alone.
These were the bedtime stories my mother read to me in the 1940's; they are sweet, anthromorpic, and child appropriate. They are written simply enough so that children who have just learned to read may also enjoy them. I have purchased new copies of several to give as gifts to my 90-year-old mother who enjoys reading them to her great grandchildren. The older children also enjoy reading the stories by themselves.
